The tourism industry in Zambia has undergone rapid growth of unsurpassed nature over the last several years. This has mainly been due to the advent of a ‘borderless’ world and increased information dissemination about the majestic sceneries throughout the world, with the southern African region being no exception.
Zambia and Botswana has had a long period of political stability. With strong growth in the last decade both the two countries have reached lower middle income status. Investor confidence has been high as evidenced in the successful issue of two Euro bonds. Zambia’s population in 2010 was 13,092,666 which increased from 9,885,591 in 2000 with the male population at 6.5 million representing 49.3 per cent while that of female was 6.6million representing 50.7 percent of the total population. The literacy levels in Zambia are relatively high currently pegged at above 60% and English is the official language which is also the case in the neighboring countries of Botswana and Zimbabwe. The local currency in Zambia is Kwacha (K), Botswana the Pula (P) and in Zimbabwe is the Zimbabwean Dollar though the American Dollar is widely used in the country. There are numerous banks and bureau de change shops located throughout Zambia and at all major airports. US$ and all other major currencies are widely accepted though it will likely be convenient to have some local currency during one’s stay. Traveler’s cheques are not widely accepted. ATM machines are available in all towns and at all airports. Most ATMs accept Visa though Stanbic Bank, located in the Mosi-oa-tunya Square shopping mall in Livingstone, will accept Mastercard. |
At a large scale research demonstrates that tourism in Zambia’s Livingstone area, Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls town and Botswana’s Chobe Region area, all the three countries sharing a common geographical border is undergoing a rapid tourism growth of unsurpassed nature. Generally there is a trend towards shorter stays but increased visits, as individuals strive to experience as many cultures as possible, including seeing as many attractions as possible across the three neighboring African countries. Increasingly Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe are being marketed as “one of the few places in Africa where game sanctuaries have remained completely unspoiled. A destination that unlocks the mystery of nature – an oasis in a wilderness which is an ideal escape for nature lovers. Very little of these fascinating countries has seen human habitation – this is true Africa in all her remoteness and authenticity.”
